Alternative Primary School (APS) Daycare and Nursery is a licensed not-for-profit child care centre that has been in operation for over 25 years.  We provide a wide range of programs for children 2 1/2 to 12 years of age.  We have a licensed capacity of 120 children.  Our goal is to provide an environment that both compliment and enhance our children`s school day.

APS Daycare and Nursery is licensed by the Ministry of Community & Social Services, Toronto Children’s Services and Public Health under the Day Nurseries Act

Philosophy

Picture
At APS Daycare and Nursery we believe in the development of the “whole” child.  Our aim is to provide an enriched, fun, loving and safe environment—one in which children can develop physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually.  At APS, learning is motivated by the child and can be self-directed.  Our program is play-oriented, and helps children develop their gross motor, fine motor, social, creative, sensory, intellectual, and dramatic skills.  Our staff provides consistent and supportive interactions with a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities.  All children are provided the option of participating in planned activities, creating an activity for themselves, or playing and relaxing in a quiet corner of the room.  Outdoor play is an important part of our program.

Co-operation and playing are encouraged with our children.  Through social interaction each child learns to express feelings, accept others and resolve conflicts.  Each child is encouraged to speak freely about their interests and ideas, thereby strengthening their communication, self-advocacy, planning, and implementation of skills.  Discipline is seen as a teaching process: through verbal communication, children learn appropriate ways to deal with various behavioural situations.

APS Daycare and Nursery fosters a multicultural, non-bias environment by actively promoting an appreciation of each child’s own culture, and the culture of others.  Equal treatment of boys and girls is expected by all and modelled by staff.

Inappropriate behaviour is constructively guided by positive redirection, modelling, examples, discussion, and the development of self-control skills.

Active parental involvement is encouraged. Parental support is an important factor in achieving a link between the home environment and the child’s ventures into the broader community as they develop independence.  Parental involvement ensures the success of our programs and our children.
